About Harry Wyatt
Bio
Harry Wyatt has been active in design since 2009 and art since 2013, when it took him captive. He was born in Chicago and has lived in Illinois, England, California (Southern, Northern), Missouri, and New York. He has made work in painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture; in all these, he has become interested in the substances from which things are made, stretching from paint, pastels, and charcoal to found objects and recycled plastic wrap.
He is also an emeritus academic in areas relating to vision and the visual system.
Artist’s Statement
I try to paint things that ask me (or tell me) to paint them. They can be actual things or ideas located in the present but are often related to something or someone in the past, to a stray thought, or to an idea that has bubbled up during a wakeful moment. Sometimes, the idea insists on being heard; sometimes, especially if it comes from long ago, it may say that I haven’t forgotten it, so I might as well do something with it. When I start a painting, in spite of preliminary sketches and collages, I’m usually not sure of the finished structure. If things go well, when I’m part way through, the painting begins to speak, suggesting possible avenues and complaining about parts of the canvas.
